AACE-AFM-102: Advanced Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Computation of Aircraft Noise



Important description
This PhD studentship develops advanced computation methods for aircraft aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. These methods include high-order computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics schemes, graphic processing unit based suite of programmes, and new efficient and stable governing equations, etc. Recently the Airbus Aircraft Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) has developed high-order computational aero-acoustic programmes, and new governing equations for stable computation of aerodynamically generated sound propagation. Together with advances in graphic processing unit which allows teraflops of floating point performance, these methods will allow a step change in computation of aerodynamic loads and sound. Within the project, the student will develop an existing computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics programme to run on GPU based systems. The aim is to enable design optimization. The outcome will be a design tool. The studentship provides an opportunity to work on advanced engineering problems. Typical problems include aircraft airframe noise and loads, and propulsive noise. A good first degree in either engineering, mathematics, physics, or computer sciences is needed.

The Airbus Aircraft Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) was opened in November 2008 at the University of Southampton. It is the result of the long-standing collaboration between Airbus and the University on a range of noise research and development projects. The Centre, led by Professor Xin Zhang, brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and wind tunnel testing to develop new noise reduction concepts. Undergraduate students also work with the research team, providing exciting projects to stimulate the next-generation of engineers for industry.

This research project has funding attached. Funding for this project is available to citizens of a number of European countries (including the UK). In most cases this will include all EU nationals. However full funding may not be available to all applicants and you should read the full department and project details for further information.

The studentships cover both basic engineering research and applied research, which fully cover University tuition fees (possibly overseas student fees) and provide a tax-free bursary of £13,900 per year, rising annually (each October) in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a 3 year duration.
