About TIGP-Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics Program (CBMB) in Drug Discovery and Biotechnology
Eligibility and other criteria
Under the leadership of former directors, the Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics Program in Drug Discovery and Biotechnology founded by TIGP, Academia Sinica in 2002 has advanced to one of the best interdisciplinary programs in Taiwan. In collaboration with leading universities in Taiwan: National Taiwan University and National Tsing Hua University, the program aims to enhance scholarly exchanges in order to benefit all parties on their overall research achievements and to increase the number of research professionals in the field in hopes of promoting the economic and social development of Taiwan. Over these years, the alumni and alumnae from CBMB have served in either academic institutions or biotech industry to contribute their expertise.
The program is divided into two tracks: Chemical Biology (CB) track and Molecular Biophysics (MB) track. CB track collaborates Department of Chemistry of NTU and NTHU, and MB track collaborates with Institute of Biochemical Sciences and Department and Graduate Institute of Pharmacology at NTU, and College of Life Science at NTHU. NTU and NTHU are the two top-ranked universities in Taiwan.
The program lays a special emphasis on five research fields, including (1) protein chemistry, (2) structural biology, (3) medicinal and biological chemistry, (4) molecular and cell biology, and (5) key technology. In addition to categorizing our faculty members and courses, this way reflects the necessary integration of multiple disciplines involved in today's biotech development.
The core courses offered by the program are Experimental Molecular Biophysics, Advanced Chemical Biology I, Advance Chemical Biology II, and Experimental Molecular Biophysics. Through the training in courses, bench skills and thesis research, this program intends to offer students with two unique strengths; one is to become an independent researcher capable of solving problems and the other is to have the vision and ability to coordinate teamwork.
[Fellowship and Stipend]
TIGP provides fellowship support of NT$34,000 (about over US$1100) per month for all graduate students during the first year of their enrollment. The stipend amount will allow students to live comfortably in the greater Taipei area. The support will be extended for another two years upon evidence of satisfactory progress towards the degree. In subsequent years, the financial support will be provided by the students thesis advisor. The amount of the support will be at the discretion of the advisor.
Candidature is open to both local and International students with a BSc or MSc degree in the appropriate field from an accredited institute.
Applicants admitted to the programme with a bachelors degree are only eligible for the Chemistry department, National Tsing Hua University. Students have to complete the same requirements set for students with a Masters degrees (course and qualifying exam requirements) and apply for a status transfer (Master to Ph.D.) with all the required documents for evaluation. A students status will be changed to that of a Ph.D. student upon completion of the above mentioned requirements and outstanding academic performance.
