Functional and Biological Assessment of a New Implant Material to Treat Focal Cartilage Defects

Important description
This project will investigate biological and functional properties of a new implant, called BioPoly both in vitro and in humans. BioPoly is an osteochondral replacement device made from a novel microcomposite of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and cross-linked hyaluronan (HA). Developed to address surgical, biological and mechanical deficiencies in current treatments for focal cartilage defects, the surgical advantages of BioPoly include broader applications (failed microfractures, patients who are older), faster post-operative rehabilitation, tissue sparing and pain reduction, and weight bearing immediately post-operatively. It provides an instantly usable bearing surface enabling immediate anatomically loaded, articulation, and unlike current treatments (eg. OATS, ACI/MACI and microfracture), will tolerate knee malalignment. The objectives of the project are to (1) Assess biological, biomechanical, functional and imaging biomarkers in patients given BioPoly implants pre and post-operatively by longitudinal assessment of patients pre/post-operatively, and (2) Assess BioPoly implant responses in in vitro models of mechanically-loaded bone/cartilage. This studentship will be undertaken in the prestigious Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre in Cardiff University and the successful candidate will benefit from the Centre's unique interdisciplinary tools, expertise and working environment. In the first instance interested applicants are invited to send a CV and covering email/letter to Miss J Cleaver at: engineering-pgr@cardiff.ac.uk PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU QUOTE THE STUDENTSHIP REFERENCE NRN-CH-2014 IN THE EMAIL SUBJECT FIELD.

Eligibility and other criteria
Candidates should hold a first degree 2.1, or non-UK equivalent, as minimum. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)

Application deadline
