14 PhD Positions in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology
The 2014/2015 edition of the Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE) curriculum of the PhD Programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) is being offered by the UME Graduate School of the IUSS Pavia to train graduates and professionals in the assessment, mitigation and management of extreme events, with a particular focus on those arising from natural hazards.
The unique characteristics of the programme include the broad, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes topics of statistics and probability, law, economics, resource management, natural hazards and risk, finance, insurance, sociology, communication, psychology, public health and medicine, and the innovative teaching structure which allows renowned lecturers from around the world to make up the teaching body.
Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 11th April 2014, and 8 scholarships are available for the highest ranking applicants. Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE) is one of the three curricula of the doctoral programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes run by the UME Graduate School, the other being Risk and Emergency Management (REM) and Weather-Related Risks (WRR). Hence, when filling in the application form, applicants will have to specify to which curriculum they are applying.
When you will have finished providing all the requested data, you will be able to 'Submit your Application', and in this way confirm officially your interest in applying to a place in the UME School PhD programme for the next academic year which begins in September. The applications for the academic year 2014/2015, which will start on September 1, 2014, will close on April 11, 2014, at 12:00, Italian time (CET).
Application for admission to a PhD Degree is based on an oral examination, following prior selection on the basis of the academic qualifications and experience submitted in the application form. The candidates selected for the oral examination will be contacted by the Admission Board to schedule the examination that will take place on 23 April 2014. Upon request by the candidate, the oral examination may take place via remote interview (e.g. using skype) from 24 to 30 April 2014.
Up to fourteen applicants in total will be admitted to the three curricula of the UME doctoral programme (provided that all demonstrate a level of knowledge compliant with the minimum standards set by the Admission Board at the UME School).
