Name of scholarship/program
Nanotube Reinforced Calcium Phosphate Composites as Restorative Bone Implants: PUPSMD-0006
Eligibility and other criteria
As part of our new developments i.e expanding the Institute of Translational and Stratified Medicine and our commitment to research excellence the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine & Dentistry have 8 full-time studentships available and are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally-rated research.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above in related subjects. Preference is given to candidates with MSc degree in biomedical engineering. International students must also have IELTS score of 7.0 or above (or equivalent qualification).
This is a joint project with School of Marine Science and Engineering and School of Biomedical and Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Technology. The overall aim of this project is to develop a nanotube reinforced ceramic composite that can be used as bone replacement. Research experience in biomaterials and biocompatibility study is desirable. The project involves studies of:
1.the growth of coating on carbon nanotubes in simulating body fluid
2.the stability of coating on nanotubes during mixing and centrifugal deposition of ceramic matrix composites
3.the effect of coatings on the mechanical properties of the composites
4.the effect of coatings on the biocompatibility and biotoxicity of the composites and the integration with natural bone
