The early Toarcian (Early Jurassic) mass extinction event in the eastern Tethys: integrating palaeontological and geochemical data from Bulgaria
The Early Jurassic mass extinction was the most severe crisis of the Jurassic-Cretaceous interval, with generic percent extinction rates around 20% at this time. The event is best known from the marine record with ammonites, bivalves and foraminifera suffering notable losses. In the northern Europe the extinction coincides with the development of black shales that are thought to be the local development of an oceanic anoxic event. This in turn has been linked to the contemporaneous eruption of the vast Karoo-Ferrar flood basalt province in the southern hemisphere that is thought to have triggered a dramatic global warming event. However, the anoxia-extinction link is only well established in northern Europe. The project will examine the Early Jurassic fossil record of the eastern Tethyan area, and document extinction losses and associated environmental changes within a high-resolution time framework. This will be achieved by linking existing local and regional geochemical datasets (e.g. strontium, carbon and oxygen isotopes) with new fossil range data (principally brachiopods and molluscs) from the Bulgarian Balkan Mountains, north of Sofia.
